When I answer shrink questions
I look it up in the index of my mind,
surprised, as a student librarian might be
the answer's there at all. Meanwhile
with concern in the eyes, they ask
how it feels, why hadn't I said anything.
Well, you see, I too didn't know
that book was even back there;
and now, with a smile, I'll put it back.
There are a lot of books--
some are easy, others difficult.
Try not to make it mean too much.

Rehearsal
I suffer sometimes
a little bit, and think
a little bit, and think
of one who'd listen;
then prepare my words
for when the time is right.
I imagine my audience
--sometimes real, or not;
maybe we haven't met--
their pleasant response
to my recited speech.
Again and again I rehearse,
each time receiving their kindness,
so that, before we speak
I'll often find myself
able to truly state:
nothing is wrong, and ask
how is it going for you?
